Spartanburg City Council heard from several nonprofit groups that have applied for Community Development Block Grants and HOME funds. The groups have requested a combined $130,944 in CDBG funds and $75,000 in HOME Funding. The public hearing was purely for informational purposes, and council took no action on the requests. Council also voted unanimously... »
Video-O-Rama: Fuji Reviewed, Student News, South29 Exposed, Dance Party and Some Irish Tune
I’m not sure if it’s our repeated appeals for more local video blogs, a result of my not having scanned the local video scene in a few months (thanks Chris!) or just the video zeitgeist of our day, but there appears to be a much more robust collection of local vlogs and videos online... »
Video-O-Rama: Jam Night Critique, Jam Night Performance, Music Video, and Cheerleading
After weeks of begging and pleading for the citizens of Spartanburg to get their vlog on. I’m pleased to announce that we’ve had someone answer the call. Local musician, blogger, Photoshop aficionado, and all-around renaissance man Bryan “ChAng” Teague posted this cool video critiquing a jam night event at Blues Blvd. Speaking... »
Listening Party: More Local Music Videos, You Say?
In sticking with the Spark’s recent appeal for more people to participate in local video-making and video blogging, this week we’re highlighting a few local musicians who have already made the leap to video. If you think about it for a moment, online videos are actually a big leap forward for local talent in... »
Video: Spartanburg City Council Feb. 22, 2010
At Monday’s meeting, Spartanburg City Council gave final approval to two rezoning requests. 700 Wofford Street was originally designated B-1 (Neighborhood Shopping District) and will now be designated R-8 (General Residential District) to allow for the construction of new Habitat for Humanity Homes. 778 South Church Street was rezoned from B-1 to... »
Video-O-Rama: A Little Help From My Friends?
Easily the most tedious post each week here on the Spark is “Video-O-Rama.” The reason for this is pretty simple: There just aren’t that many people in Spartanburg posting videos, unless you count the local car dealers posting video ads. So, rather than do yet another post where I put up the Library’s Monday... »
Listening Party: Watch More John Watson Videos
This week, I thought I’d go for something very simple and suggest that we all take a few moments to check out John Watson Video on YouTube. Watson has been capturing a lot of local concerts, most notably the Live at The Showroom series, and since we’re pushing pretty hard for more video coverage... »
The Big Idea: More Spartanburg Video Blogs
As the various members of the Spark team experiment with their own variations on video blogs, I thought it was high time to post a video blog about how Spartanburg could benefit from a few more voices in the local video blogging community. Which brings us to this week’s Big Idea: Spartanburg needs more... »
Sparkle City Headlines: Kimbrell’s Furniture to re-open as downtown nightclub
According to a story in the Feb. 17th edition of the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, a new nightclub called Rome will soon be coming to downtown Spartanburg. Local businessman Josey Wells recently signed a lease on the 28,000-square-foot building, which formerly housed Kimbrell’s Furniture. According to journalist Trevor Anderson, plans for the “upscale” club include “extravagant... »
Video-O-Rama: Songs, Jobs, and Armed Robbery
Here’s a good tip for any of you aspiring musicians out there. Learn the name of the town you’re in, and mention it in a song that you “make up” on the spot. Got that? Well if you don’t, here’s a clip of up-and-coming singer-songwriter Eric Hutchinson performing at USC-Upstate to... »

Has everyone gone video-blog crazy? Quite possibly. This week, we revisit two local bands Coma Cinema and Aaron James & The Adrenaline Junkies, with the hopes that actually being able to hear the bands perform will give everyone greater appreciation for the local music scene, but without the hassle of dealing with other websites... »

Video-O-Rama: Running Backs, Wound Treatment, Ironic Appreciation, and Cotton Jones
Some of the biggest stories in local sports don’t occur during the game. Case in point, every local football aficionado had been waiting with baited breath to hear Byrnes’ star running-back Marcus Lattimore’s decision on whee he was planning to spend his college days. SEC analyst Jay Holgate posted this video, where... »
Video-O-Rama: A Little Sledding, Library, Haiti Relief Pilot, and a Song About a Clown
You might expect that on an icy weekend where everyone in town was stuck inside, YouTube would be inundated with quality videos of winter weather activities, people sledding, having sleet-ball fights, making sleet angels, and generally entertaining those of us who take it upon ourselves to look at local videos. If you did expect... »
