Someone suggested, that it would be a good idea for voters to have a sort of Candidate’s resume for the upcoming elections this November. I like the idea and wonder what you think of the idea. I’d like to see something that is similar to any work resume, employment history, clubs and organizations they belong to, goals for the job they are seeking, etc. It would be awesome if we could get the candidates themselves to contribute them…or at least someone from their campaign to do so. So…what do you think?

I’d be concerned that people would vote for the person with the most ”impressive” work history or education rather than the person with the best ideas. Truman never graduated college for example, but now he’s considered one of the best presidents of the 20th century. I’d hate to think that someone might be deprived of office because they couldn’t afford to go to an ivy league school, or because they choose to go into social work instead of becoming a business tycoon.

I’d think a summery of the candidates’ positions on issues pertinent to their office as well as what level of importance they give to each of those issues. Of course you’d have to get through the various talking points to do that.

You are correct, as usual. However I’d like to see more then the usual fare of bashing the other guy, dodging real discussion on issues and all those annoying campaign ads…oh wait. I don’t watch tv…forget that third part

I’d settle for any notification of any Dem candidates that are running. Guys are constantly running unopposed and despite my donations the Democratic Party doesn’t think I’m worthy of getting anything in the mail. I have just come to the conclusion that they have totally given up doing anything in this part of the state.

I’m in shock. WSPA actually had a story tonight about our US Senators not voting for Unemployment Benefits. They tried to get any of them on camera or on the phone and they wouldn’t comment. They had an woman who was laid off try to call Graham on camera and she couldn’t even leave a voicemail. They had a nice clip of the woman saying they don’t care about us. It’s like I woke up in Bizarro Spartanburg.

It really is sad, especially when one considers how much money businesses pay to State and Federal Unemployment Insurance funds to help provide for those who find themselves laid off. I understand that we are in a down-time employment wise, and that hopefully within the next year things will improve, but I do wonder how the Unemployment Insurance funds were managed and if there were and ”rainy day” contingency plans for an economic setback. It’s not like such a thing hasn’t happened before. In 1982 unemployment rates averaged 9.71% nationally, rising briefly to over 10%. You’d think someone would have learned from that time in our recent history.

I really try not to think about our State Unemployment fund. After that fiasco with the head of the department stealing millions and Sanford trying to refuse federal money to fund it I can only imagine that it is in horrible shape. Remember when the state legislature went out of session without approving some federal rule change that turned off benefits for people? I thought the backbone of conservatism was fiscal responsibility? I’d hate to see irresponsible behavior if that’s being responsible.

Very much enjoyed the Citizen Spartanburg gathering. Met new people, had stimulating conversation. A great way to wind down my day.

I gave thought to the new bookstore, but there aren’t that many seats there so we’ll have to see.

Sounds great. I have nothing planned for the weekend. Except to work tomorrow till 7, then work on a term paper, and a draft for next week’s column. Of course other times will do. Where to meet, when to meet?

So instead of letting the group sit here, with everyone sitting around looking at each other, I thought it’d be cool to Spark (get it?) the idea of a get together. You know, so we can sit around looking at each other IN PERSON.

The only thing I would suggest is a cooler time of year for future events. I have a friend who had planned on attending the last one and was advised not to because of the heat, which aggravates a health condition

By the way, you’re welcome to start an Upstate Pride / LGBT group on the Spark. It doesn’t have to be lumped in with the progressives.

I’d like to hear the forums comments regarding the area’s burgeoning GLTB Pride movement. Did you/are you participating? What do you think of our mayor’s proclamation? If you attended the march & festival, what was wonderful and what needed some tweaking?

I like the bigger can but, like everyone here, miss the glass pickup. We kept the bins when they brought the BIG BLUE. (shouldn’t it have been GREEN or is that just me?) We cart those to the county when our carport points out just how much beer and wine we and our guest consume. [...]
