From Diogenes to George Carlin, cynics have been looking society square in the eye and telling the rest of us why it all sucks for thousands of years. Am I a member of that club? Well…without being nearly as famous or smart, yes I am. As far as I’m concerned, cynicism is just another word for realism, and realism is a quality in short supply these days.

I’m just gonna say I love this idea for a column. You bring a very relaxed sense to some really intelligent, sometimes heavy topics – topics that a friend would bring up over a beer. What a great, great idea. Also, I want your job.

    • Mine too! I should be insulted, but I still get a kick out of the idea of a cynic who is so damned laid back.

      • Cynics are a laid back bunch. It’s one of the side-effects of lowered expectations.

Also, I should have specified in my vlog that I wasn’t referring to any of my Spark colleagues when I said I had some specific people in mind. Of course, that’s not to say that you two couldn’t benefit from a little more cynicism in your lives. :)

This vlog topic is just screaming for some examples of what it is that you are talking about. I thought I’d hear some in five minutes of ranting! So anyway, it would be nice to hear some examples of where people might be positive about something that they shouldn’t be, or things that we should be cynical about, or examples of people being dishonest to themselves with their positive thoughts instead on solving problems. I’m just curious.

    • I’m just dipping my toe in the water here, not looking to call people out for specific things. Besides, keeping things vague can sometimes be the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down.

Having said that, I’m sure that at some point down the road–most likely in a column rather than a vlog–there will be something that merits that sort of thing.
