Each Thursday, the Spark likes to ask our readers a vital, burning question that simply cannot be ignored. It’s too important, too impactful, to ever go unanswered. That question?

“Hey, whatcha doin’ this weekend?”

It’s not as silly as it may sound. We’re all part of the same community, but we’re also part of different social circles. We have different interests, different passions and different ideas about how to spend our free time. By sharing something as simple as our weekend plans, we can create a much richer picture of what all kinds of people, events and interests are in Spartanburg.

And because it’s completely unfair to ask anyone else to go first, the very least I can do is start, opening my humble weekend plans up for examination and likely ridicule.

Thursday: Work on the Spark’s design a little. In fact, that’s kind of the extent of my weekend plans.

Friday: Listening Party, which is all about the “official” Fall Mix CD. We didn’t have a lot of input, so I’m going to have to make up my own. That’s gonna be weird. In the afternoon, I’ll be over at Bob’s Pretty Good Bookstore, working on making his website more usable. No plans for the evening, and a 50/50 chance I’ll do more site development.

Saturday: Possibly the Farmers’ Market in the morning, followed by writing Blog Report. More site development this time on the new bbPress forum I’m hoping to launch to replace our frustrating in-house user forum. Then, maybe I’ll watch whatever movie NetFlix sent me from my queue with the wife.

Sunday: Video-O-Rama in the morning, then mowing my terribly overgrown yard. Then, maybe I’ll check out Junie White’s campaign event at Duncan Park. No other plans.

I mean, look at how lame my weekend is. Are you seriously going to say, with a straight face, that you don’t have better ones? Of course not. Put me, and my weekend to shame by sharing your great plans. Pretty please?

FRIDAY: going to the Orange Peel (Asheville) to see SUNN O))), Faust, and Eagle Twin. This is a pretty big deal since SUNN O))) only play like, four shows in America at a time. Most of the time they are in Europe / France playing weird one-off shows at Art Galleries. Also, Faust have been around since 1971, when they formed in Germany. Original band founder Uwe Nettelbeck died in 2007.

SATURDAY: probably sleeping in all day and recovering.
    SUNDAY: who knows!

  2. I will be at the David Reid Theatre tonight, Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon for Spartanburg Repertory Company’s musical revue, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “A Grand Night for Singing.” If I weren’t the board president and required to be present at all performances, I would be attending one of the “Opera Scenes” performances at Converse College’s Petrie School of Music on Friday or Saturday evening. Saturday morning will include a run to the Hub City Farmer’s Market.

Thursday-getting new tires for the car-had a blow out, yay! Then, keeping the girls up late so they sleep in the morning (no school).
Friday-I have no idea-would love to have a babysitter so Tony and I can actually go out, but we’ll see.
    Saturday-Family Reunion at Lake Cooley.
    Sunday-UUCS, then housework.

Steve, my plans are WAAY lamer than yours.

Friday: if jack has a good day at school maybe we’ll walk down to jazz then home to hang out.

Saturday: farmers mkt. a kid’s bday party. David comes home after being gone for a week! So I may dump the kids on him and leave home. hehe. just kidding.

Sunday: Jam in the Park at Duncan Park. LOVE going to those. Y’all come go with…it’s free. Bring chairs, a cooler. Kids. Frisbee. Hang out, listen to great music and yap with friends. Great fun for cheap! :)

    • Angie says:

Ooh, Tammy we’re going to try to be there tonight. We DO have the kiddos tonight, and Tony LUVS some jazz and I’ve been trying to get us down there for a few weeks now. See ya!

  7. Thursday: Going to the first night of the Green Screen film series at Hub-Bub

Friday: Contemplating the meaning of life, solving the major problems of our time, wondering why exactly I shouldn’t eat yellow snow when it could be yellow for any number of reasons besides the obvious, gross reason, continuing my mission to grow my beard to wild and unkempt looking lengths, and watching Netflix

Saturday: Part II of Friday’s epic quest

Sunday: Going to Junie White’s thing and writing Monday’s FO column as a way of earning my bubble-gum money.

  8. Julie says:

Thursday-recovering from a week of jury duty and children juggling, watching the ballgame and entering data from door knocking session. Also, drinking a well-earned beer.

Friday-surprise birthday party (first birthday party I will have been to in a long time that wasn’t for someone under the age of 8)

Saturday-door knocking with out of town friends, then driving to Greer for a sleep over with same friends and 5 kids.

Sunday- Jam in the Park (counts as campaigning, right?)

  9. zaksma says:

Friday: No definite plans but I may try to swing down to Jazz on the Square depending on the moods of the kids. They tend to be an unpredictable group lately.

Saturday: If no rain, heading to the Harvest Day Festival in Inman- as always, I rarely meet a small town street festival that I don’t love.

Sunday: Probably going to hit the yard and work on some weeding. There may be some scarecrow building if I can get to Lowes to buy some bales of hay/straw (is there a difference? probably). Since these are purely for decoration and not actual scaring of crows, we are flexible on the building materials and the kids had a blast doing it last year.

I will be sitting around waiting for the liberal lightening rod to interview Sally Peake with the same questions he has asked the would be candidates for Spartanburg City Council.

    Video would be nice.

    • I, too, would like to know what the Mayor of an entirely different town thinks of the Spartanburg-specific issues like Downtown Master Plan, city-supported business incubators and small business growth in general, annexation, changing off-year elections to capitalize on greater voter turnout, concrete ways the city can support affordable housing, responding to Spartanburg’s high HIV rate and the other topics Chris asked both candidates about. Because, you know, all of those are liberal topics.

  11. camelmike says:

I am just gonna say LLR from now on. Starting this weekend.

  12. My plans are the lamest.

Today: haul of trash and recycbles, then work

    Tomorrow: work

Sunday: Sing at church, then likely laundry, cleaning etc.

Monday: More of the same. Maybe hang up a picture or two. OH and babysit the toddler

I’d rather spend the weekend taking naps, surfing the web, and being generally lazy..oh wait. vacation in a couple of weeks…just be patient girl.

I have to mention the other night at the bar below the Hub-bub, I had a blast at their weekly open-mic, hosted by the very talented Sydney McMath (which was her maiden name, not sure of her last name now though.) Tonight I’m going to town to visit friends and bringing back company for the weekend.

Sunday is the pre-festival meeting for everyone that will be working at the Moonshiners Reunion mountain music festival, not this weekend but the next in north Spartanburg. If you wanna check that out for next weekend take a peek at their site: http://www.Moonshiners.com
or see the article I wrote for the Spark here last year about it:

Barney is doing better with his cancer, by the way, but not completely out of the woods yet.
