Listening Party: The Official Spark Summer Mix CD

Oh, the majesty!
What’s missing? A Spartanburg-only summer mix CD to listen to on my mosquito-free porch while I swing in my hammock and take long pulls from a cold one. Sure, I’ve listened to plenty of local music since starting up the Spark, but I need help putting together the right collection. It has to be good for the porch, good for a late-night drive with the windows down, good for sharing with friends, and … most importantly … it has to really capture this exact time in Spartanburg. Because, as we all know, the best thing about having a summer mix CD is rediscovering it years later in an old shoe box filled with random junk, giving it a spin, and instantly being taken back in time.
To do this, I need your help. I know a little about the local music scene, but I’m far from an expert. I need suggestions for the most interesting songs by the best local musicians, and I need to know where I can download them from (or cleverly rip them using software that exists in a legal gray area). And I can’t do this without your help.
Here’s how it works: You suggest a song by a particular local artist in the comments, making sure you leave a link in the comments. If you actually are the artist, you can even send me the song as an mp3 to publisher@spartanburgspark.com. I’ll add a few suggestions of my own, too. Then, next week, I’ll announce the playlist for the “official” Spark Summer Mix CD, with links to the relevant songs, so that you can make your own.
In theory, this could be quite a bragging right for a local band or musician. I mean, it is “official” after all.
The possibility exists that only a very few people will submit song suggestions, in which case I’ll compile it myself. Alone. While weeping. So help a guy out and submit a few song suggestions, please.

Hey saw ur tweet about the mix CD…my brother, Kip Darby, is in a band from Spartanburg, Quarterfly. You can find their music on iTunes. Please add them to the CD. My favorite is “If It Happens Again” from the Quarterfly 2 CD.
I’d be a fool if I didn’t suggest one of my own songs like “Satellite” or “Under my skin” or “(a country song) for you” @ http://www.myspace.com/thecoldrosesmusic
That being said here are some of my local favs:
“Paulene” by the Ragged Orchids – http://www.myspace.com/theraggedorchids
“Matter of pride” by The Watts – http://www.myspace.com/thewattspage
“Sweet Carolina” by Marc Higgins Band – http://www.myspace.com/marchigginsband
-John Scoggin
“rollover” by Albert Hill (the group that, sans Robbie Bowen, would become “Dezerays Hammer”)

With unemployment on the rise, I think a funny, lighthearted blues song about not having any money because I don’t have a job, and not having a job because I don’t have a car, and not having a car because I don’t have no money, (the vicious cycle) would be a great addition to the mix.
It’s called “Da Blues” and is on my myspace page, where you should be able to download it or free, I’d imagine. http://www.myspace.com/dangchang
It’s a true story.
“good for a late-night drive with the windows down”
“Unsteady Sleep” by fire island, AK
made during a long-night with no sleep, lights out, windows open, A/C busted.
i think it fits these warm SC nights fairly well, especially if you just want to take in the ambiance (and the occasional siren / cat fight).
sort of a lo-fi Stars of the Lid type ambient track.
or maybe William Basinski by way of Aaron Dilloway?
maybe even comparable to a less intense / angry Boyd Rice.

“ZAUBER” by fire island, AK
taken off Murmur & Belial (2x cassette, 2008).
made during yet-another sleepless night.
the vibrations made from pacing my bedroom as played through an electric guitar set upon the floor.
absolutely perfect for sitting on the porch with friends and drinking some beers on a hot night.
Absolutely anything by John Edgerton.
