I’d like to start off this week by saying the Yellow Pages are ruining my local YouTube experience. Of the first page of 20 videos that came up in this week’s local YouTube search, 15 were cheaply produced and cheesy promos by the Yellow Pages. I’m all for sharing information, but couldn’t a big company like YellowPages maybe do us all a favor and just host the videos on their own site?

Then again, maybe people really are surfing for content like this …

Now that my little anti-Yellow Pages hissyfit is over, here’s a cool little video of a song called “Lights of Spartanburg” by Santa Cruz, CA-based singer/songwriter Mary McCaslin.

Trainspotting is a hobby I’ve never quite understood, but if anything it’s alive and well on YouTube. About a minute into this video, shot at the Amtrak station In Spartanburg, we see a pedestrian with wacked-out priorities tempt fate as he crosses right in front of a fast-moving train.

Having read the entire run of Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball series, I’m horrified by the potentially awful movie adaptation of the series. But newfound Spartanburg-based vlogger Kratos87Fan19 is doing his best to convince all of us skeptics that it’s going to be awesome. Warning: If you’ve never heard of Dragon Ball, this vid will probably seem like the ramblings of a man who has lost touch with reality. We are Otaku … we speak our own language.

While I’m tepid about blogger Jimmy Moore’s Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb project, I have to give credit where it’s due on his first-hand reporting of the recent “Free Grand Slam” promotion at Denny’s, which saw massive crowds surge the Spartanburg-based restaurant chain across the nation. (Skip ahead to about 3 minutes in if you know the backstory of the promotion.)

That’s more-or-less it for this week. As always, if you know of a cool local video we missed, mention it in the comments and make sure to post the URL so we can all check it out.

THANKS for mentioning my YouTube video about the FREE Denny’s Super Bowl Grand Slam giveway. I’m sorry you’re unenthusiastic about my blog content, but I think you’d be surprised how much you would agree with and support the content of my blog. Regardless, thank you again for the link love today. :)

  2. Jimmy Moore: Thanks for stopping by. I wasn’t trying to knock your blog, I’m just lukewarm on the low-carb thing.

But the vlog was good stuff.

After viewing Mary McCaslin’s “Lights of Spartanburg” above, I emailed her website to ask whom the song is about. Just thought I’d share the reply:

Thanks for your note about Mary’s song and for letting us know it’s part of Spartanburg Spark’s webpage.
The song is about musician Walter Hyatt who died in the 1996 Florida Valuejet plane crash.
It is on Mary’s latest CD Better Late Than Never (CD Baby, iTunes). There are more videos from the same show on her webpage
