Thursdays are the flirting teases of the work week. They hint at a weekend to come, but taunt you with the knowledge that such freedom isn’t as close as it may appear. After all, you’ve still got Friday’s hurdles to jump. Still, it’s a good time to think about what you’d like to do once the formality of working for a living has been addressed.
Each week, I mention a few things we’re excited about for the coming weekend, and ask you to contribute your own. What is Spark excited about this week?
To start, there’s the final film in the Hub-Bub’s “From Here to Awesome” indie film showcase, which highlights two movies — a feature and a short — and presents them for free at the Showroom. Of course, this is happening tonight at 7:30 p.m., so it’s not part of the weekend proper. But, it’s also free, and you can’t beat that. The final films in the series are All for Melissa, which is about a guy’s obsession with a famous actress and his Quixotic quest to win her heart, and a short film called Memoirs of the Elderly, which is an animated film about a young man who meets an old stranger at the park “who recollects crazy memories from his past involving unicorns and dinosaurs.” If you miss these films, don’t fret. The Hub-Bub will be starting their next series of free weekly films — the environmentally aware Green Screen series — on Thursday, Oct. 10.
It’s actually something of a busy Thursday, because the nationally touring political satire group The Capital Steps are performing at the David Reid Theatre in the Chapman Cultural Center. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $33 and $25.
On Friday, the 16th annual Moonshiners Reunion taps its oak-barrel of rock and bluegrass in the wilds of Campobello. Owing to the recent cancer diagnosis of iconic moonshiner-turned-musician Barney Barnwell, some are speculating that this might be the last year for the fest, so this might be your last chance to visit Plum Hollow Farm’s big shindig. The festival takes place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4. Tickets are $25 per day, and a Weekend Pass is $45. Ticket price includes camping and parking fees. No advance tickets available. For more information, call (864) 592-9899 or (864) 680-0225, or e-mail Moonshiners@Moonshiners.com.
Saturday morning is the Hub City Farmer’s Market. If you’re planning on making jack-o-lanterns this Halloween, it might be a good time to start looking around for the gourd that best fits your sensibilities. Although the official hours are from 8 a.m. to Noon, I’ve found that early arrivals can get pretty good deals. If you’ve never been, you should at least stop by and give it a chance. It’s located at the Magnolia Street Train Station in downtown.
And, of course, there’s the Sunday Songwriters at Sonny’s Brick Oven Pizza. I haven’t been yet, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. It starts at 7 p.m.
But enough from me. The real question goes to you: What are you doing this weekend? What interesting antics do you have planned? What awesome event did we overlook? You’re in the know — you tell us!

The Kickoff party for The Big Read is Saturday night 7pm at the Main Library downtown. for mor ino go to http://www.infodepot.org
Going to see a Nashville rock band called The Coal Men at HUB-BUB tonight. Going on a day trip to Chimney Rock with friends tomorrow and perhaps a camp out on a farm near my apartment when I return. And I just learned that there’s an Obama rally in Asheville on Sunday afternoon, so I may go to that with a group of friends and fellow liberals.
