A few weeks ago, we began taking nominations for the first-ever Sparkle City Blogs Awards. For the past week, we’ve been accepting votes to decide which local blogs will take home the most important prize on the internet — bragging rights. Voting closed at midnight on Friday.

So who won? Read on …

Best visual or photo blog: Slobot About Town
Technically speaking, locally oriented photo essay blog Slobot About Town may not be a blog. It’s more of an experiment in visual story telling, perhaps. But, it’s more like a blog than anything else, and we’re more than happy to give it the benefit of the doubt. Runner-up: 4P Photoblog.

Most pop-culture savvy local blog: Reeva*Dubois
Spartanburg has a shortage of pop-culture bloggers, but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. Reeva*Dubois is clever, catty and unrepentantly fascinated by the strange eddies in the flow of American media culture. Even if you don’t care about pop culture, it’s worth visiting just to read what Reeva*Dubois thinks it. Runner-up: William Bryant.

Blog most in need of an update: Punk with a Palate
Irregularly updated even at the best of times, Punk with a Palate is a blog that holds so much promise of interesting content that we’d be doing ourselves a great disservice not to hint, plead, imply, cajole, whine and beg for an update. Runner up: Myles Will Save Us All.

Best local “Mommyblog” (parenting or family specific): The Pit Stop
The dark horse in the competition for best Mommyblog, The Pit Stop’s cute photos of kids and simple, earnest prose probably helped it edge out the other local parenting blogs to take home this coveted prize. Runner up: Sylvie is a blogger.

Most articulate local blogger: Hub City Historian
Easily the most hotly contested category, the award was ultimately claimed by Brad Steinecke, who blogs about all manner of topics relating to Spartanburg’s history. Well done, Brad! Runner up: Flying Oskar.

Best local political blog: Seeding Spartanburg
When it comes to local politics, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone covering it with as much passion and insight as Tammy over at Seeding Spartanburg. Runner up: The Plastic Breech of Contracted Blues.

Funniest local blog: Myles Will Save Us All
Updated (more-or-less) daily and featuring a variety of funny images, videos and posts culled from the best of the internet, Myles Griffin has earned his place as the funnyman of the local blogosphere. Runner up: The Plastic Breech of Contracted Blues.

Most insightful local blog: Flying Oskar
When it comes to covering a broad variety of topics — from politics to music to local culture — and covering them all well, Chris over at Flying Oskar never fails to be interesting and worth reading. Runner up: Kudzu Telegraph.

Congratulations to all our winners, and our hearty thanks to all of the local bloggers who threw their hats in the ring (or tolerated others throwing their hats in the ring for them). You’ll be getting your official prize — a digital certificate from Spartanburg Spark and Sparkle City Blogs — later this week.

And, if you like what you’ve seen here, consider paying a visit to the newly redesigned Sparkle City Blogs site, now featuring (almost) live feeds from a variety of local blogs.

  1. You like me, You really like me. well, first I’d like to thank the academy for this enormous honor. Second I’d like to thank my third grade teacher for saying I’d never amount to anything, and lastly I’d like to thank myself for just being so damned “insightful”.

Seriously though, thanks to everyone who nominated or voted for me, and thanks to Steve for putting this thing on.

  4. It’s worth noting that at least two of the winning bloggers put up posts on their blogs asking their regular readers to vote in this poll. So, if you didn’t win, consider a better marketing campaign for the next round.

Charlotte: Next time, I’m making a category for best vlogger. You’ve already won.

  5. Woa! That was completely unexpected! Even though i lost the local election for Coroner, I’m glad to have gotten the more important station of Internet Celeb. All my links seems to be going to Punk With a Palette on this site. Weird.

Charlotte, you’re leaving! You technically won’t be a Sparkle City blogger any more! It’s been a dog’s age, ma’am. :(

  6. I’m already in Charleston now, actually–living in a two bedroom collective with ten other smelly, hairy hippies(“progressives” we like to be called). I’m totally excited about it, but I’m actually going to miss Spartanburg a lot–I’ve met some of the most amazing people in my year here. It’s also super sad that I can’t be vlogging queen, the patron saint of vlogging, emporess vlogger, Lord Vlogemort anymore. However, I’m sure with my current living arrangements, my video content is about to excel past expectations. Keep watching, I suppose, and you best believe I’m going to continue reading Spartanburg Spark. It’s a super awesome site, and I wish you the best of luck Frying Panafelt.
And Myles, it has been faaaaaar to long. Come to Charleston.

    IN SHANAFELT WE TRUST.
